[BEGIN TRANSCRIPT]

In solidarity with the Black community, the Black Deaf community, and the Black Lives Matter movement, DCARA will close all of our offices on Friday, June 19, 2020, in honor of Juneteenth.

We want to support our communities and recognize the significance of Juneteenth. In light of the Black Lives Matter movement, racial injustice and civil unrest, this day is for all of us to reflect and engage in how we all can do our part in pushing for change. California, as a state, recognized Juneteenth in 2007 but has fallen short by not establishing it as a state holiday. In 2019, Governor Newsom had issued a proclamation declaring Juneteenth as a Day of Observance but still not as an official state holiday. This does not mean we cannot do something about this. We all must continue to stand up and advocate for this to be recognized. We must push for this to happen. It starts with us all, and together can tip over the scales.

Just because we are recognizing Juneteenth as a holiday, it is simply not enough to just stay home. We would like to encourage our communities to attend the Bay Area Black Deaf Advocates (BABDA) event, as they will host Juneteenth: A Virtual Celebration on FB Live. This virtual event will start at 6:00 PM PST until 8:00 PM PST on Friday, June 19th. You can watch this event on DCARA and BABDA Facebook pages. Check the flyer for more information!
