OUR GOAL

To help hard of hearing and late deafened individuals achieve independence through meaningful communication access and improved self-esteem by providing peer-to-peer support, coping skills, advocacy, information and resources on assistive technology and communication alternatives.

This goal supports DCARA’s mission to promote self-determination, independence, and celebration of American Sign Language (ASL) among a diverse Deaf community, regardless of communication background.

WHAT WE DO

The priorities for the Hard Of Hearing & Late Deafened program are to serve a specific population with a need for emotional support, coping skills and practical strategies as they deal with the everyday challenges of living with hearing loss.

DCARA’s HOH & LD program is designed so that individuals will gain an understanding on ways to improve upon, or change their knowledge, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors, which, over time, will have an impact on their level of autonomy, self-image, self-advocacy and self-determination.

The HOH & LD program provides the following services:

  • Advocacy
  • Communication Assistance
  • Community Education
  • Peer Counseling
  • Information and Referral
  • Independent Living Skills
