We have what is called Estate and Inheritance Taxes. We are always taxed on property after death. However, if you leave donations or gifts in your Will, you (your family) avoid having to pay those taxes, which is nice. If you leave a "bequest" in your Will, it's the same as leaving a "gift." You can leave bequests of cash, stocks & bonds, property - such as a house, land or other items like a car, furniture, art (especially deaf art). These are just some examples of things you could leave as a bequest to be given to DCARA. It's important to understand that if you do want to leave a certain amount of money in your bequest, be specific when you write that in your Will. Put down exactly how much you want to give. You can also put down the exact purpose your bequest would be used for. There are two ways to write bequests. List your donation as "restricted" or "unrestricted."

Do your friends and family agree with DCARA’s mission? If so and you’re willing to host a small gathering to benefit DCARA, contact headquarters staff to set a date (two months or more in advance) and DCARA staff will assist you with mailing invitations, following up, and providing information for your guests.

By making an in-kind donation of goods or services DCARA needs, you can help reduce expenses. Donations of office supplies, refreshments and prizes for events, food and grocery gift cards for the free community Thanksgiving Feast, graduation gifts for high school seniors, and certain other items DCARA staff can use in our offices are welcome. Office space is limited, so please consult DCARA staff about any bulky donations (furniture, equipment, etc.). Contact DCARA headquarters to arrange pick-up of in-kind donations.

By giving every month, you can spread your donation over the entire year (or any number of months you prefer) and help DCARA budget resources more effectively to serve our community. Monthly pledge forms are available to download here, or simply call, mail, or email DCARA headquarters to make your pledge.

If you wish to include DCARA in your will, or as a beneficiary of a trust or insurance policy, sample will forms and information sheets are available on request from DCARA staff. Always consult an attorney and financial advisor before making important estate planning decisions.

Check DCARA’s website at www.dcara.org for more information on upcoming events or send your name and address to DCARA headquarters to join the mailing list. If you would like to subscribe to DCARA’s E-news, go to www.dcara.org/email.

Through a partnership with Car Program LLC, DCARA accepts donations of vehicles (cars, trucks, boats, trailers, and RV). Car Program LLC tows and sells the vehicles and handles all the paperwork. 70% of the proceeds go to DCARA. Most cars are accepted, even if they are no longer running, and pick-up can be as soon as four business days, possibly sooner in “rush” situations. To donate your vehicle, contact DCARA headquarters for a donation form, or print the form at www.donateacar.com, write DCARA on the “charity” line and return it by fax to (916) 631-4336. [Note: only charities receiving vehicle donations each month are listed on the website, so DCARA is not yet included in the web donation form.]
