As a Californian, you may know that our state is a leader in environmental protection and preservation.
We take pride in setting the example for the rest of the nation.
However, the Golden State still has work to do to reach our goal of reducing carbon pollution levels by 2030.
Have you heard of the “Time-of-Use”?
San Diego residents transitioned to Time-of-Use in 2019 under SDG&E.
But what is it?
Time-of-Use (TOU) is rate plans in which your electricity bill at the end of the month reflects how much electricity you used not only by the amount used but also by the time of day it was used.
You see, electricity prices vary depending on how much energy is available at that time of day.
Electricity prices will be higher during peak demand hours from 4 PM to 9 PM and lower during off-peak hours, before 4 PM, and after 9 PM.
The TOU rate plan encourages you to conserve energy during peak hours in order to use more renewable resources.
If you want to manage your energy habits and shift your use of electricity during the off-peak and super-peak periods, then a TOU plan might be the best fit for you.
This plan may vary throughout the state so it is important to check in with your energy provider, whether that’s Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E) or Southern California Edison (SCE), or San Diego Gas and Electric (SDG&E).
Each utility company is transitioning at different times.
For Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E) customers, the transition will start in Mendocino and Sonoma Counties this April and grow to include other counties throughout the year.
For Southern California Edison (SCE) customers, the transition will begin in Fall 2021 and continue into 2022.
Your transition depends on which specific county you live in – but don’t worry, your utility provider will send you a series of notices ahead of time!
The first will arrive 90 days before the transition, the second 60 days prior, and the final reminder will arrive one month ahead.
It’s important to note that this is not a bill increase, but rather, an opportunity to change your energy habits to benefit both your wallet and the environment.
You can learn more about TOU by reaching out to your energy provider or visiting www.energyupgradeca.org.
