Last week, we informed you all that the Governor of California has announced that, starting April 28th, CalFresh is now available for use online at Amazon and Walmart. Today, we want to explain what that means for those who have CalFresh EBT cards, including those who have CalWorks too!
1) Can I use my EBT card to make grocery purchases online?
Yes, if you get CalFresh food benefits, you can purchase groceries online using your EBT card. You can purchase the same food you would normally purchase in-store.
If you get CalWORKs, you can purchase groceries and other essentials online using your EBT card in addition to certain retailers.
2) Which stores will accept my EBT card online?
Right now, you can use your EBT card to make purchases online only at Walmart and Amazon.
3) Why am I limited to only using my EBT card online at Walmart and Amazon?
Currently, Walmart and Amazon are the only stores that are allowed to accept EBT cards online in California. CalFresh is working hard to add more stores in the future!
4) Can I order online and have my items delivered?
On Amazon, you can purchase groceries online using your EBT card and have them delivered. If your food cost less than $35, you cannot use your CalFresh food benefits to pay for the delivery fee. You have to pay out of your pocket. However, if you buy more than $35 of food, delivery is free.
However at Wal-Mart, you can only purchase food for pick up. The delivery option is not available right now.
5) Do I need to sign up anywhere to be able to use my SNAP EBT benefits?
For Amazon, yes, you will need to sign up. In order to use your SNAP EBT card, visit www.Amazon.com/SNAP/Register and follow the instructions on the screen. If you are not already an Amazon customer, you will need to create an account and add your SNAP EBT card plus zip code to make sure that you are eligible. There are also opportunities to add an EBT card during checkout or in your wallet.
For Wal-Mart, there will be no need to sign up. But you will need to ensure that you add your EBT card information at check out.
